Grand Targhee Snow Cat Skiing (Wyoming)

Did a 1 day snow cat skiing at Grand Targhee (1/25/2021)

Cost was $475+ whatever you want to tip

Had Scoop and Eric as our guides

Both really good guys and knowledgeable

Here’s the key learning..... book a cat day trip the day after a dump or the next day. We skied 4 days after the dump (the dump produced 15 inches) . We skied some fresh tracks at times meaning you ski over tracks and find a fresh patch for about 2-3 turns then you ski around and find another fresh patch. All told we had a couple of long stretches with virgin powder but the problem is that they just don't have enough area to give you untracked powder for the full day of skiing unless you are at it the next day or day after that dump. The snow was excellent (light) and held up nicely because the weather was cold (in the high teens). Slopes ranged from 30-35 degrees. Only did a couple of pitches at 35 degrees.

The cat is open air so perfect with COVID conditions

Skied about a total of 12 runs and about 15k vertical. The rate limiting step was the speed of the cat, meaning we could get down before the cat could.

Tree skiing is shitty here because the trees are either too close together or too far apart.

Also there’s a lot of little saplings (Aspens) that were hard to maneuver around at the same time trying avoid the big trees. Also the aspens had a lot of low lying branches

They stop for a snack and lunch at a little snow tent with a few picnic tables . Food was very basic.

Oh and did I mention they have a photographer ride a couple of runs to make even a modest skier look good!

Happy Trails
